- Fifth furnace at the Feluy, Belgium location
- Increases capacity to over 50,000 tons per year
- Built to help customer meet strict sustainability goals
Chemviron SA, the European Operations of Calgon Carbon, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kuraray, has opened a new activated carbon reactivation furnace in Feluy, Belgium, which will increase Chemviron’s Central European reactivation capacity to over 50,000 tons per year.
Activated carbon is a leading technology for the effective removal of contaminants from air and water which can be safely and cost-effectively recycled for reuse. High temperature reactivation followed by off-gas treatment ensures that the adsorbed organic compounds are destroyed, and the carbon’s adsorption capacity is restored.

High temperature reactivation followed by off-gas treatment ensures that the adsorbed organic compounds are destroyed, and the carbon’s adsorption capacity is restored.
Recycling activated carbon by thermal reactivation meets the environmental need to minimise waste and cut CO2 emissions while reducing operational costs for our customers.
Chemviron’s Feluy Reactivation Centre in Belgium, the largest activated carbon recycling facility worldwide, now has five multi-hearth furnaces and has been reactivating granular and pelletised activated carbons in Europe since the 1970’s.
The new furnace has the latest operating features based on the significant expertise and operational capability that have been developed in-house over the years. Reinier Keijzer, President of Chemviron, said, “This new furnace will not only increase Chemviron’s capacity and flexibility to provide recycled activated carbon, but will also help our customers meet their sustainability goals. The technology applied reduces water consumption and includes energy recovery for steam and electricity generation, as well as reducing wastewater discharge.”
Chemviron’s expertise in manufacturing activated carbon and providing mobile service units enables us to provide a range of services tailored to meet different challenges. With several locations throughout Europe, Chemviron can provide service solutions to meet our customers’ local needs.
Chemviron is committed to ensuring the sustainable provision and availability of reactivated and virgin carbons, a core business for the Company.
